“Did you have a problem with the language barrier while abroad?” is a question I get asked a lot when I came back to the States. I even had people asking if I spoke all of the languages in all the countries I have visited. Thank you for thinking so highly of me, but I don’t, unfortunately.

I legitimately didn’t think this was a concern for anyone wanting to travel to other countries. But after being asked so many times, I want to write a short article talking about it.

Not knowing the language while visiting a foreign country can be very scary, but trust me… I encountered minimal to no problems at all. The only problem I had was not able to order the correct food. Yes, that is a concern I take seriously. I want to try as much of the local delicacies as I can, but sometimes language barrier prevented that.

With modern technology, there are hundreds of apps that could be very useful. Google translate was my best friend. Not only that, in most of the countries I have visited, most of the younger generations know basic English. This also prompted us to make many local friends while abroad because many wanted to practice their English skills with us.

It is also worth mentioning that learning some local words/phrases before going to the country can help in the long run. This shows the locals that you are genuinely interested in their culture and would be more enthusiastic to help you out.

When being asked for help, many will not hesitate and step out of their way to help even though there is a language barrier. And if they can’t help, they will find someone that can speak English to help.

Happy Travels!
