We really didn’t have many expectations for Hong Kong food. We know it was similar to Chinese cuisine, but we didn’t realize how original dishes in Hong Kong can be. I apologize in advance that some dishes may not have pictures of the food because I was too hungry. Also, the places I listed have food ranges from $12-$25 HKD. Here are some delicious meals we enjoyed while in Hong Kong:

1.Joy Hing Roasted Meat

I love peking duck so trying out a place famous for it was a must. Hidden away in the busy island of Hong Kong, Joy Hing restaurant was the definition of a hole-in-a-wall. Here you can find roasted duck, pork, and chicken. The menu was in Chinese so we weren’t sure what other foods were available. Thankfully our waiter was super nice and helped us order their most popular dish: roasted duck with white rice and a side of boiled vegetables. It sounded simple, but the taste was amazing. They give us a lot of the meaty part, which is nice because we usually just get mostly fat and skin. The place was small and we shared a table with someone else, but it just added to the experience. The food was really good and I think you could definitely find many places in Hong Kong that are just as good. But if you are in Hong Kong and just want to see what the hype is all about then definitely give it a try!

2. Mak An Kee Noodles

I think I saw this place on CNN or one of those food shows a few years ago and added it to my bucket list immediately because who doesn’t love wonton. Again, this place was just as hard to find as the other. We walked past it while in the search. The menu was all in Chinese, but thankfully there were pictures that we could point out to the waiter. The wonton bowl was small, but it packed so much flavor.

3. Nom Nom Dumpling

I saw this place while googling “places to get dumpling in Hong Kong” and then accidentally saw it on a walk. Thank goodness they also had pictures on their menu because we would have had no idea what we were ordering. While eating, you can watch through a glass wall the chef preparing the dumplings. They also had these pickled vegetable jars on each table that you can use a thong to fish out the vegetables to put them in your own dish. They were soooo goood! The pickled veggies were sour but sweet at the same time. This made a great pairing for the dumplings.

The jar on the left with the red lid is the delicious pickled veggie. I also ordered some sort of herbal drink that was also as good as the food.

4. One dim sum

One must-try when in Hong Kong is dim sum… and this is the perfect place. Each dish is about $10-$20 HKD, so very reasonable. We ordered about five dishes for the two of us. That was plenty. The food was delicious for the price and the atmosphere was very cozy. We did have to stand in line for about ten minutes, but that gave us time to look over the menu. I wanted to order everything on the menu but we ended up ordering some steamed pork dumplings, steam buns with bbq pork, chicken feet, and fried tofu skin wrapped around minced meat.

I would definitely recommend this place if you want to try some good dim sum.
