I recently went back to Hanoi,Vietnam to participate in Vietnamese New Year which is the biggest holiday in Vietnam.
I would not recommend travelers to come the week after new year day because most shops will be closed. But the days before the new year day is a lot of fun. This is a holiday that people celebrate with family so many take the whole week during or after the new year. Of course, if you do happen to go during that time, there will be shops open but very few.
To show how busy Hanoi could be before the new year day, I composed this short video. It is mostly random clips I tapped during the days before new year day. I looks very hectic and chaotic but I had a really good time. Hanoi is quieter during the day after new year day so there wasn’t much for me to tape.

If you ever come to Hanoi, PLEASE stay some where in Old Quarter. I guaranteed you will not be disappointed.
